Volkswagen Long Life Servicing

What does LongLife Servicing mean to you?

• Fewer visits to the workshop, meaning less time off the road
• Lower lifetime service costs
• Less oil to dispose of, helping to improve the environment

How advanced engineering and oil has changed the way your Volkswagen is serviced

The LongLife service regime is so called because there are no set service intervals, but there may be additional work carried out at certain times.

Caddy, Transporter and Caravelle models

Depending on how you drive your vehicle and the conditions of use, a service will be required anywhere from 9,000 miles, up to a maximum of approximately 18,000 miles, or 24 months (whichever comes first).

Crafter

Depending how you drive your Crafter, it will require a LongLife oil change at the interval service which occurs at a maximum of 25,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first.

LT

The LongLife service regime is not applicable to LT.
Castrol have developed in conjunction with Volkswagen Commercial vehicles fully synthetic LongLife oils formulated to meet the requirements of the Volkswagen LongLife service regime. The oil is able to sustain levels of cleanliness and wear protection throughout even the longest intervals that can be achieved on LongLife servicing.
The latest range of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle engines have been developed using this advanced oil. These engines use built-in sensors that continually monitor the oil quality, making it possible to enjoy reliable and confident motoring throughout the LongLife servicing period. This servicing regime will benefit you over a period of time by reducing the number of services, bringing the cost of ownership down and minimising days off the road.
Your Volkswagen Van Centre will explain both the LongLife and Time/Distance service regimes. Traditional 12 months or 10,000 miles - whichever comes first on Caddy, Transporter and Caravelle models. For Crafter vehicles programmed on a Time/Distance regime, an oil change service is required at 12,500 miles/12 months whichever comes first.

Answers to the most frequently asked questions:

What is LongLife oil?
LongLife oil is a high grade, fully synthetic oil with increased resistance to ageing and high temperatures

Can I use any high grade fully synthetic oil even just to top up?
NO! All Model Year 2007 and later Caddy, Caravelle, Transporter and Crafter require LongLife III VW norm 50700 oil. Although this oil is designated 5w30, not all 5w30 oils are the same. The critical oil standard is VW 507 00 which MUST be displayed on your bottle. Use of the incorrect specification of oil may cause damage to your engine.

Is the LongLife regime more expensive than the traditional Time/Distance regime?

No. The basic service cost hasn't changed, so because you need fewer services, you will save money. However, LongLife oil is more expensive than conventional oils as it has to sustain wear protection. Importantly this increased cost must be seen in context. Over a period, the reduced number of services means that the cost of ownership nearly always comes down.

If I am on the LongLife service regime, I might not have my vehicle serviced for up to 2 years; will this affect my warranty?

No. Your warranty covers against defects of manufacture. However, if a component fails due to your vehicle not being serviced in accordance with Volkswagen recommendations, this will not be covered by the warranty.

I am concerned that my vehicle can be used on the road for 2 years without any safety checks.

Many components are far longer lasting than they used to be. The engine oil level is electronically monitored and the battery is maintenance free. Tyres are the most vulnerable item and you have an obligation to check these on a regular basis. Additional work will be carried out as detailed in the service schedule.
For further information concerning the servicing regimes, please consult your Volkswagen Van Centre for full details. Please note, all mileages are approximate as the service indicator system uses Kilometres as the distance measurement.
